How Rachel Hollis Used Brand Stories to Build Her Media Empire
Raise your hand if you love Rachel Hollis! Even if you don’t, you can’t deny she’s built one heck of an empire. And while it might be easy to assume her success comes from luck or connections, I think it’s a mix of hard-work, resilience and leveraging the power of her stories to scale her business.
So how’d she do it?
I wish I could just call her up and ask but sadly, we’re not BFFs...yet.
So instead, I did some digging and got to the bottom of how she grew her business to the powerhouse gamechanger it is today.
If you want a behind-the-scenes breakdown of how she did it, read on!
Rachel Hollis: Using The Power of Story To Her Advantage
In all honesty, I was expecting to find Rachel Hollis super annoying.
I mean, c’mon! With that peppy attitude and a blog that makes me feel inadequate on all levels, I just assumed her life was a million light-years away from mine.
But I wanted to like her, so I ordered Girl, Wash Your Face and got to reading.
And you know what? I LOVE HER.
I love her sassy, tell-it-like-it-is attitude. I also love her outlook on life. That doesn’t mean I agree with her on all the things but I can appreciate her opinion (even if it differs from mine).
Being the natural researcher that I am, what interested me most wasn’t her upbringing or her make-it-happen attitude; it was how she grew her business to what it is today.
Here she is, coming from nothing, and rising up through her own tenacity to build a few (not one, not two, but three!) businesses along the way. And not just any businesses, but successful ones at that!
So I did some digging and here’s what I found.
Rachel Hollis Can Tell A Good Story
Rachel (you like how I’m just using first names like I know her?) has had one heck of a life. From being raised in a super-religious home with not a lot of money to her early days in Hollywood, sans college degree, to now rockin’ stages left and right cheering women on...she’s really seen a lot!
(newsflash-so have you I bet)
So when it comes to sharing stories, she’s got a lot to choose from.
But just having a lot of stories doesn’t mean she’s naturally good at sharing them. Her secret?
No, literally. She practiced. Over and over again. She writes her stories in her books, on her blog and shares them on stage.
The problem so many new entrepreneurs have is they’re afraid to put their story out there. So they don’t share it. Which means they don’t practice sharing it. Which feeds the fire of fear in telling the story in the first place.
See the pattern?
Rachel Hollis is Transparent AF
Girl does not hold back!
Does she receive criticism? Yup.
Does she get negativity thrown her way? You betcha.
Do people either love or hate her? Totally.
And for Rachel that’s just part of playing a bigger game.
Your opinions will never please everyone, so why even bother trying? Your beliefs, values and ideas are uniquely yours. Sharing them will always receive some sort of reaction - whether that’s from a total stranger 14,000 miles away or your Uncle Bob at Thanksgiving dinner.
So take a page from Rachel’s book and just go for it already!
Rachel Hollis Isn’t Afraid to Have An Opinion
Read her books and you’ll have more than one opinion you probably don’t agree with. And you know what? That’s ok!
Since when did we have to agree with everything someone says? On the same note, just because we don’t agree doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.
Her opinions are controversial because she’s human.
As Dita Von Teese says, “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches.”
Remember, you can’t please everyone so think what you think and stop holding yourself back!
The Rachel Hollis Method For Up-leveling Your Marketing
I’m going to dub this the Rachel Hollis Method™ because...why not? Here’s how you can take a page for Rachel Hollis’ own story strategy marketing plan:
You never know who’s gonna need what you have to share, so stop holding yourself back and start telling your stories today
If you’re feeling nervous to share a big AHA moment or even just tell people what brought you to this moment in life, I want you to take a deep breath, count to three and just do it anyway
If you’re worried about backlash or negative comments consider it’s them (the naysayers) and not you who have the REAL problem
Put your opinions or beliefs out there (without being a pretentious know-it-all of course) one story at a time and let your confidence build in baby steps
It doesn’t matter if your Rachel Hollis with 1M+ followers and fans or starting out with only your mom liking your Facebook page, being unabashedly YOU is all it takes to start sharing your stories today.
