My greatest pet peeve is when someone asks me a question that can easily, quickly and reliably be answered via the internet.
The best example I have for this is time zones.
I live and work from around the world. My scheduling software is set-up to accommodate my time zone changes so my assistant and person scheduling the call don’t have to use up important brain power trying to do the math. There’s even a confirmation email with the date and time which can be added to their calendars.
This is for the benefit of everyone involved, not just clients but close friends too.
Someone will send an email or text asking me to tell them the time difference.
Not only are there multiple time zone websites that let you plug destinations in with a click of a button (thanks Google) but anyone who owns a smartphone can use their world clock to do the math themselves.
Yet most people don’t take the initiative and instead, rely on someone else to tell them the answer.
Or what to do.
Or how to do something.
There are two types of people in this world: those with a figure-it-out mentality and those without.
In our new digital world, being a person who can figure-it-out is a really good thing.
You can take courses, watch videos and read blogs that you can then put into action because you are self-motivated.
Part of the fun in life (whether you’re building a business, constructing a bookcase or learning to bake) is the figuring out part.
If, on the other hand, you like being told what to do and don’t enjoy thinking for yourself then the digital frontier can be a minefield. You want the answer (or success) but you’re not willing to put in the time and energy to scale the learning curve.
My preference is for the former.
